A faithful reproduction of the Jaques Of London 1855 Edition 3.5" Chess Set. A lovely set to play with, and just holding the pieces will make your day let alone playing with them! Why not own such a stunning piece of history?Superb Limited Edition Chess SetJaques of London has been instrumental in the development and success of modern chess. Chess pieces before the mid 19th century were of two kinds - excessively elaborate and costly hand-carved reproductions of the Kings court, or rudely turned and daubed pieces in which rank was dictated by height alone. In the 1840s, this all changed, when Nathaniel Cooke, from the Illustrated London News, showed John Jaques, a brand new elegant design for chessmen. This initial design was to produce a set using symbols (a 'Crown for the king, and a 'Mitre' for the Bishop) which would then be easily recognized and reproduced. This radical design received fantastic reviews in the press, particularly for the exquisite design of the Knight, which was based on sculptures from the famous Elgin Marbles. Mr Howard Staunton, the first British chess World Champion, was so taken with the design that he agreed to have his name and signature on every box of pieces. The Staunton chess set, as it became known, is now the de facto standard for play at all levels. Few companies have influenced the development of a game, the way Jaques of London has shaped the world's favorite board game. This extravagant 1853 Edition 3.5" Chess Set is presented in a stunning solid baize lined heavy Beech box with brass furniture. A fantastic reproduction of a truly wonderful original set. A perfect partner for the lovely 20" Inlaid Jaques Of London Chess Board!
